History of Bullcroft Memorial Hall
HISTORY
Bullcroft Memorial Hall, on Chestnut Avenue, Carcroft, Doncaster is built on the site of the old Miners Welfare Hall, on land donated in 1924, by the Davis-Cooke family, of Owston Hall. The Bullcroft Colliery Miners paid one penny a week out of their wages to build the old Welfare Hall and also maintained it until the colliery closed in the late sixties. There was a good social life around the Welfare and many a married couple of today met and married through meeting at the dances held there. The “Over Sixties Club” met socially in the Hall for more than forty years and at the time there were brass band concerts, parties, wedding receptions and many happy times until it was vandalised, and for safety reasons it had to be demolished. At that time, a group of volunteers had already formed with of mission to refurbish the old Hall, so the demolition led to the idea of building a new Community Centre – the outcome was the Bullcroft Memorial Hall. This was brought about through the hard work and determination of a small band of the Community.
